Alongside Mario, Link, Lara Croft, and Doodle the Doodler, Sonic The Hedgehog is universally considered one of the most iconic characters in videogame history.
Set to celebrate his 20th birthday next June, Sega’s jet-heeled, blue-skinned, spiky mammal has returned to his 2D platforming roots for the latest episode of the long-running South Island saga.
As an indication of the legendary Japanese game publisher’s increasing commitment to the iPhone platform, Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 has raced onto Apple’s handset first, a full four days prior to its console cousin.
Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 follows on directly from its predecessor Sonic & Knuckles (released in 1994 for the Genesis / Mega Drive), revealing that the maniacal Dr Eggman, aka Dr Robotnik, has survived the last epic encounter with our favourite prickly protagonist and is hell-bent on revenge.
Across four main zones - Splash Hill, Lost Labyrinth, Casino Street, and Mad Gear - seven special stages, and two acts designed exclusively for the iDevices, super Sonic must do battle with Dr Eggman’s new robotic creations and end-of-level bosses.
Fortunately for fans of the Speedy One, Sonic possesses two special moves, the Sonic Spin Dash and the versatile Homing Attack, to complement his phenomenal footspeed.
Sprint on over to the App Store now and collect Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 (plus a few rings and Chaos Emeralds in the process, hopefully) for £5.99 / $9.99 / €7.99.
