Despite the premium price tag of £5.49 / $8.99 / €6.99, Square Enix’s remake of its 23-year old Role Playing Game Final Fantasy has shot to the top of the paid apps chart on its debut, beating away strong competition from EA’s Monopoly.
Final Fantasy for the iPhone is an updated version of one of the defining titles of Japanese RPG history. The series has gone on to sell over 85 million copies worldwide since its first incarnation on the NES in 1987, and this strong brand awareness among consumers would have helped push sales on the iPhone.
Final Fantasy II, which was also released last week with its older sibling, only managed a fairly disappointing 9th place on the charts, while PopCap’s critically acclaimed tower-defence game, Plants vs. Zombies, slipped from the summit into 3rd position.
