Top 10 UK Paid Apps on iPhone

No time for sleeping

If a week is a long time in politics, what does that make a fortnight? That’s probably the kinda question David Cameron didn’t dare contemplate during the August London riots. But it’s one that resonates in the app and game development industry, too.

Technology moves at such a pace that the smartphone in your left hand right now was out of date the second it left the assembly floor. Correction: the second it was conceived.

Anyway, according to all reputable and disreputable analysts, the next-generation iPhone - putatively called iPhone 5 - will be unveiled in two weeks at a swanky venue somewhere on the Apple campus.

And be obsolete approximately two minutes later.

Success has a similarly ephemeral quality to it, as the designer of Sleep Talk Recorder on iPhone has discovered to its cost.

On September 9th, MadInSweden’s snooze-monitoring tool was riding high on the UK paid-for apps chart, its #1 status cemented forever. Or so it hoped.

Today, Sleep Talk Recorder occupies 5th position on the download leaderboard, overtaken by a resurgent The Crystal Maze - courtesy of ANOTHER recent content update - and Top 10 mainstay WhatsApp Messenger.

And what’s this? Free. Music. Download. Pro. It’s not often you see the words ‘free’, ‘music’, ‘download’, and ‘legal’ rubbing shoulders with one another in a sentence, yet here they all are, happy as can be.

Before you get too excited, though, pilgrim, BSO Soft’s Free Music Download Pro service doesn’t hook you up with ditties from the likes of Lady Gaga, Radiohead, and Kanye West.

Instead, it encourages users to explore websites chock full of royalty-free (read: alternative for a reason) tunes, including Jamendo and Live Music Archive, and to go download crazy.

And if you thought Sega’s Sonic The Hedgehog was the only gaming vicenarian likely to trouble the UK App Store’s bean counters, the 20-year-old cinematic platformer Another World has just made you look a fool.

Can BackStab take silent revenge on all of its competitors and climb to the top of the app mountain, or will Another World - 20th Anniversary emulate Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing by sprinting up to third?

Tune in next Friday to find out.
