Top 5 iPhone Apps for Dickens's 200th Anniversary

Best apps to entertain a legendary author on iPhone

There are some whose contributions to culture will render them immortal. Picasso's name will be forever embedded in the minds of art lovers the world over. Music connoisseurs will be discussing Beethoven for centuries to come.

Where the written word is concerned, however, there are very few people as worthy of note as Charles Dickens.

So, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, here are the five iPhone apps to which even the great man himself might have taken a shine.

Works like Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, and A Christmas Carol are rightly regarded as seminal pieces of literature: will the following quintet of iPhone apps be held in such similar esteem in decades to come? Yeah, I reckon.

Stick with me on this. Despite Capcom's recently released adventure title having nothing to do with building words or arranging letters, it does deal with an issue close to Dickens's heart: apparitions. Like Ebenezer Scrooge, Ghost Trick's protagonist Sissel is able to visit the past in non-corporeal form and reflect on how small actions can impact the future in big ways. Unlike Scrooge, however, Sissel can possess a fridge. Still, we think there's enough ghoulish intrigue in this madcap murder mystery to keep Dickens occupied for another 200 years.

Though the concept of fridge magnets might require a little explaining, we have no doubt that Mr Dickens would be a dab hand at polygon letter-arranging game Wooords. All the excitement of Countdown without the boring number bit, this addictive little word builder is good for hours of anagram-based entertainment - something that every wordsmith can surely get behind.

Given that the 1800s are largely synonymous with gas lamps and parchment, there's a good chance that Dickens would be a little befuddled by concepts such as podcast subscriptions and micro-transactions. Eucalyptus not only removes the hassle of repeat purchases by offering 20,000 classic novels for a one-off fee, but it also replicates the experience of turning a real page. Hopefully, that'd make our out-of-time author feel a little more at home.

Although the printed medium may be on its last legs, that doesn't mean that the world has stopped reading. Thanks to apps like iBooks, we can now download the complete works of Shakespeare to the same device we use to fling birds at pigs. Though Dickens might not be so interested in that last bit, the prospect of holding an entire library in the palm of his hand would have probably caused him to keel over on the spot.

Simply put: PopCap's Bookworm is a classic entry in the App Store annals. Why? Well, for one (and probably two), Bookworm's scorekeeper Lex has an appetite for words as voracious as any 19th-century scribe. We're not sure what Charles would have to say on the matter of linking letters to keep a virtual worm happy, mind, but he might enjoy fiddling with the tiles.
